The Golden Rule: Act Fast, Never Rub
The most important step in removing a carpet stain is speed. The fresher the stain, the more likely you'll lift it completely. And crucially: do not rub — rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres and spreads it. Instead, blot with a clean cloth from the outside in.
How to Clean a Carpet Without Removing It
- Lift any solids with a spoon or blunt knife
- Blot the stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible
- Mix lukewarm water with a little mild detergent
- Dampen a cloth with the solution and blot (don't pour water directly)
- Blot dry with a clean cloth and let it air-dry
Treating Common Stains on Light Carpets
- Coffee & tea: lukewarm water + a splash of white vinegar. Blot until it fades.
- Food & grease: sprinkle baking soda to absorb the grease, vacuum, then clean with a mild solution.
- Ink: dab with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol — never rub.
- Kids & pet stains: a water-and-white-vinegar solution helps lift both odour and colour.
Warning: always test any solution on a hidden corner first — especially on light or wool carpets — to make sure it won't affect the colour.
When to Call a Professional
Some stains are beyond home remedies: old set-in marks, dye stains, deep odours, or valuable Persian and wool rugs. In these cases, professional deep steam cleaning is the safest option to avoid damaging the carpet.
